Geography Essay

To write a good geography essay you should take into account the following pieces of advice:
· Make a plan before you start writing
· Do not think of too many issues. If you do, you may exceed the word limit or you may not have enough time to develop all issues.
· The issues should be given in order in the introduction
· Develop each issue in a separate paragraph.
· Include specific evidence for all your issues
· Use linking words and phrases to connect ideas throughout the essay
· Use formal style
· Avoid using colloquial language, short forms, and simplistic words. Make use of more sophisticated vocabulary. You need to understand exactly what the question asks you to write about and how to use the information you have read when preparing your geography essay.
When writing your geography essay do not forget about the structure of an essay:
· Introduction- in which you include the statement of topic and the plan of development;
· Body- in which you develop the supporting paragraphs in turn;
· Closing paragraph- in which you present your conclusion.
Your geography essay should contain well-developed paragraphs consisting of more than one sentence. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence which summarises what the paragraph is about. Both the beginning and the ending are very important in a geography essay. In order to write an interesting introduction, you may use different techniques:
· Make reference to a strange situation: e.g. Some scientists believe that natural gas may only last until 2050.
· Use direct speech, address the reader directly, e.g. Are you aware of the fact that one way to help reduce pollution would be to encourage people to ride their bikes or walk to their workplaces?
· Use a rhetorical question, e.g. Isn’t it amazing how people could reduce pollution only by driving vehicles which run on lead-free fuel?
· Start with a quotation, e.g. The more trees we plant, the more oxygen there is in the atmosphere.
· The last paragraph of the geography essay may end with: A quotation or a rhetorical question, e.g. Have you ever thought of using environmentally friendly products when cleaning the house so that you do not pollute the water or damage the air?
· Your personal opinion ( you may use phrases like: In my opinion, I believe, I think, In my view, etc.) · Giving the reader something to consider, e.g. perhaps the world would be a safer and more pleasant place to live if both the air and water would be cleaner.
